On Friday, April 13, Burry Bookstore is hosting Hartsville Author Wayne S. Wallace and her dog Barney from 4 until 5:30 p.m. She will be signing copies of her new children’s book Barney Tales.
Wayne Wallace is a Hartsville native. While in high school, Wayne studied journalism, was a member of the High Notes staff, and won several first place awards for her feature stories. She also had numerous poems published in high school poetry anthologies. In 1961, Rudy Leon asked her to write feature articles for "The Hartsville Messenger." She remembers one of the articles vividly. Governor Ernest Hollings spoke at Thornwell Elementary School. He granted Wayne a short interview and autographed a picture for her. She was paid $5.00 each for her feature stories. Wayne has written several "class reunion" poems for their reunion booklets. "Barney Tales" is her first venture into book writing. Her nephew, Jim Stratton, illustrated the book for her.
Barney Tales was written by Wayne as her husband, Harry, supposedly narrates this group of five true stories about a neat little dog they found on their back doorstep one frosty October morning. Barney, whose left ear always stands straight up, loves his old faded chewed-up beach towel. He's quite adventurous as you will see from "Dad's" tales of squirrel and possum hunting. He detests baths but loves to romp and play with his friend, Simon, the dog next door.
Burry Bookstore is located in downtown Hartsville and has been serving customers in the surrounding community since 1972.
